THE IMPORTANCE OF LANGUAGE
“Language is the most powerful tool in the development of any human being. It is undeniably the greatest asset we possess.” (Vygotsky, 1986).
At a very young age, children should be exposed to reading in all text types. "By showing an enjoyment of and engagement with books, parents transfer literacy skills and a love of reading to their children."(Hill,2012)
"Reading and talking about books together enhances interactions with the child, and builds vocabulary and comprehension skills."(Hill,2012). Initial learning to read will promote making meaning of language and therefore will support reading to learn. Story-telling is a great way to extend your child's language and listening skills. Story-telling can be about favourite characters, family members or their favourite toy. You can make it exciting with different voices, props or a finger play. Use what interests your child and create a character and setting. Involve your child in selecting books, magazines and dvds and multimedia stories.
Language acquisition and a variety of genres promotes perspective and empathy towards others because it takes the reader to other places and the views and situations of others. A wide range of literature will expose your child to other cultures and diverse issues faced by others in the world.
