HOW YOUR CHILD LEARNS LANGUAGE
Literacy comes in many forms and is taught not only through recurrent reading and writing, but also through a child's everyday surrounding environment.
Children are extremely adaptable to their environment, yet require a literacy-rich and supportive atmosphere to gain an extended amount of knowledge of language and literacy.
You can support your child’s literacy learning by encouraging many opportunities to use oral language, and creating a variety of literacy experiences.
Your child will benefit from:
-being read to, or you listening to them read daily from a variety of texts (at least 15 minutes per day):
-an area with materials for writing and reading, such as books, paper, crayons and paints:
-joining in with the singing of rhymes and songs:
-a dress-up box to stimulate imaginative play and language:
-visual cues such as personal photos to recount special occasions:
-questions you may ask about favourite stories you have read them:
-family discussions and games focused around language (eg. Scrabble)
-cooking simple things together while you model reading the recipe and talking about what you are doing:
-joining the local library and toy library and choosing things together.
